Essipit

Geographic location:

Located on the edge of the St. Lawrence River, the Essipit Reserve is surrounded by the Municipality of Escoumins. Situated 40 kilometres from Tadoussac, the reserve has a surface area of 86.25 hectares.

Population in 2007:

416 people (including 237 outside the reserve).

Characteristics:

A Member of the Mamuitun Tribal Council, the community of Essipit is currently engaged in comprehensive territorial negotiations with the governments of Québec and Canada.  Forty-four percent (44%) of the population is under 35 years of age. The community, which is very dynamic, is recognized for its expertise in the recreational tourism sector and the outfitting field. It has also entered into a partnership agreement with Hydro-Québec as part of the project to divert Portneuf river.

Infrastructures:

Aside from the basic infrastructures, the community owns several recreational facilities, a museum and offers services intended specifically for young people.
