Matimekosh (Schefferville)

Geographic location:

The community is located about 520 kilometres north of Sept-Îles and is divided into two territories: the reserve of Matimekosh, located on the edge of Pearce Lake, has a surface area of 68 hectares; the reserve of Lac-John, located 3.5 kilometres from Matimekosh and from the centre of Schefferville, has a surface area of 23.3 hectares. It is accessible by plane and by train.

Population in 2001:

813 people (including 101 outside the reserve).

Characteristics:

A member of the Mamuitun Tribal Council, the community is not yet holding comprehensive territorial negotiations. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of the population is under 35 years of age. Economic activities are concentrated in the following sectors: arts and crafts, retailing and services, as well as construction. A family of the community owns an outfitting establishment in the region.
