Matimekosh (Schefferville)

Geographic location:

The community is located approximately 520 kilometres north of Sept-Ïles and is divided into two territories: the Matimekosh Reserve, located on the edge of Lac Pearce and having a surface area of 68 hectares, and the Lac-John Reserve, located 3.5 kilometres from Matimekosh and from the centre of Schefferville and having a surface area of 23.3 hectares. Both territories are accessible by plane or by train.

846 people (including 97 outside the reserve).

Characteristics:

The communities of Matimekosh-Lac-John and Uashat-Maliotenam are part of the Ashuanipi Corporation, which represents them in the comprehensive territorial negotiations. The economic activities are concentrated in the arts and handicrafts, trade and services and construction sectors. A family of the community owns an outfitting establishment in the region.
