Uashat– Maliotenam

Geographic location:

The reserve of Uashat, located on the western limit of Sept- Îles, covers a surface area of 1.08 kilometres2 and is surrounded in this city. The reserve of Maliotenam is situated 16 kilometres east of Sept-Îles and covers an area of 5.02 kilometres2.

Population in 2001:

3,328 people (including 609 outside the reserve).

Characteristics:

A member of the Mamuitun Tribal Council, this urban community is not yet taking part in comprehensive territorial negotiations. Sixty-five percent (65%) of the population is under 35 years of age. The community has numerous stores and a growing number of qualified workers. It has also signed an agreement with Hydro-Québec concerning the development of Sainte-Marguerite River.

Infrastructures:

Aside from the infrastructures and basic services, the community has a seniors’ home, an outdoor theatre, sports facilities, a home for young people, a shopping mall and a museum.
