La Romaine (Unamen Shipu)

Geographic location:

The community is located 400 km northeast of Sept-Ïles on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River and covers a surface area of 40.47 hectares. It is accessible only by plane or by boat.

Population in 2007:

1,056 people (including 52 outside the reserve).

Characteristics:

In 2007, the communities of La Romaine and Pakuashipi passed resolutions of their respective band councils to indicate their withdrawal from the Mamu Pakatatau Mamit Assembly. Sixty-seven percent (67%) of the population is under 35 years of age. At the economic level, the community is carrying out work related to the redevelopment, upkeep and management of the airport on behalf of the Government of Québec.

Infrastructures:

In addition to the usual infrastructures, the community has a health centre and an outfitting establishment.
