Last December 10th, the Government of Québec ratified the appointment of Mr. Benoît Bouchard to the position of representative of the regions as part of the comprehensive territorial negotiations with the Innu communities of Betsiamites, Essipit, Mashteuiatsh and Nutashkuan.
A graduate in humanities and teaching from Université Laval and the holder of a Bachelor of Arts degree from Séminaire de Chicoutimi, Mr. Bouchard has held the positions of Chairman of the Transportation Safety Board and Canadian Ambassador to France.
MP for Roberval in the House of Commons from 1984 to 1993, Mr. Bouchard was responsible for several ministerial portfolios, in particular those of Transportation and Health. Prior to his involvement in political life, he pursued a career in the education field.
Since his retirement in September 2001, Mr. Bouchard has been very active in his community. He has taken part in various committees of regional organizations.
In his capacity as representative of the regions, his role consists of informing and consulting the populations of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and North Shore regions, whom he will then represent at the negotiating table.
